Three methods of construction, three different price ranges !?!?

Hand sewn turnshoes, correctly constructed, are not cheap and are beyond the price range of many re-enactors, especially if they are going to be in for a lot of wear and tear.

For this reason I offer three different methods of construction.   In all three cases the uppers are sewn together with authentic , butted, seams , it is the methods of attaching the soles which differ.

Method one is the budget range, here the sole is attached with a single thread  through two sets of holes in the sole running from the edge of the sole to slightly further in.  The sole is quite secure but this is not as tight a seam as can be achieved with other methods.

This type is quite serviceable and will last as long as any other with care.  A second sole is glued on to protect the stitches, this gives an added bonus of a thick, comfortable sole!. Treat frequently with Dubbin or similar products and you should have no trouble at all.  This method of attaching the sole is quickest, thus the cost is kept down to as little as £ 40.00 per pair of shoes.

In method two the sole is attached with a double stitch through a single set of holes all of the way round.  This gives a much tighter seam, again the stitches are protected by the addition of a second sole. This method of stitching takes longer, so type 2 costs more and shoes are available from £ 70.00 per pair.

Method three is the most authentic. The soles are attached with a proper  butt/edge double stitch and the shoes are made inside out then properly turned, making them fully authentic  Turnshoes.   Turning hides and protects the stitches so no additional sole is attached.  This takes the most skill and time and this is reflected in the price.  Shoes from £ 90.00 per pair.
